We are investigating various ways of creating audit shadow tables. I was
wondering is there is some facility to asscoate an application id with a
connection so that when triggers fire as a result of that conenctions sql
activity that the tragger can record the application iD currently associated
with the connection along with the user and timestamp.

Have a look at the information available in connection_property('AppInfo')
and see if that will help you.

In the ConnectionString add 'CON=ApplicationName'. Doing that you will see
for each connection the parameter. I use that to count distinct hosts wich
connect to dbserver
Good luck
