Default Question about backup options - 09-30-2009 , 03:03 PM

Hi,

I am running Adaptive Server Anywhere 9 (9.0.2.3593). What I need is to
setup off-site backup that will be updated on hourly basis with the most
recent data. It would have to copy data, stored procedures, views and
users/groups. Is there a tool for Sybase that would do what I am trying to
acomplish? Basically, the main requirement is to copy only new data as the
databases are 10GB+ and copying such big database every hour would be very
inefficient.

Thanks.

In short we provide the dbbackup utility for this purpose, you should
probably give this white paper a read before you start planning your
backup strategy to see what is best for you.

I responded on the MobiLink newsgroup where I would encourage you to
continue this thread instead of here on the General newsgroup.

Here were the options presented:

You have a couple of choices depending on the LAN speed between the
remote locations.

1. You can perform incremental log backups and send the log to the
other machine.

2. You can use SQL Anywhere mirroring between the 2 servers /
locations.

3. You can use MobiLink between the 2 servers. Incidentally, under
this setup, the main server is the REMOTE and the backup site is
the CONSOLIDATED. This may seem backwards, but it is by far the
best way to set this up for performance.

Which option you choose depends on many different factors, which I
believe is best discussed around MobiLink and on the MobiLink forum.
