Default Password encryption - 11-27-2007 , 06:56 AM

Hi,

I want to connect to ASA 8.0.3 using the ENP (EncryptedPassword) connection
parameter. Does anyone know how to get the encrypted password?

Thanks,
Iaacov

Iaacov,

Set up an ODBC source including user name and password, check "encrypt
passwoird", and get the encrypted password from the registry
HKLM\Software\ODBC\ODBC.INI\<name of your system ODBC source>\
or
HKCU\Software\ODBC\ODBC.INI\<name of your user ODBC source>\

However, be aware that this is not a "real" encryption (or hashing).

Anyone who knows the encrypted password can
a) connect to the database using the ENP connection parameter and
b) can "unencrypt" the password by setting up the ODBC datasource in the
contrary way (i.e. by unchecking the option).

Therefore IMHO, ENP is primarily useful to protect against someone who tries
to spy on your keyboard while you're typing in the password - simply as the
encrypted form will be harder to memorize (at least with a typical
password).

Volker - confesses to use ENP now and then, too.
