Default database on USB Hard drive - 04-25-2006 , 06:17 PM

I know that it's no-no to run a database on a network drive.

What about from a USB hard drive?

ASA 9.01 1751 windows XP

USB is definitely not a place to put a database file. We have had other
customers who have and they have experienced corruptions from 'improper'
removal of the USB drive.

Is that the only issue?

The world of USB drives includes some fairly heavy-duty external hard
drives, ranging from 40G+ portables to 350G+ desktop units, not just
flash drives.

The issue of the USB drive being unplugged is the same for any external
storage unit.

My concern would be with the USB driver itself, all of which are pretty
"new". The requirements of write order and caching would be the same as
those for any filesystem:

Thanks guys. We are getting a db from a customer that is 60gb in size (via
an external USB hard drive) and will therefore copy it to an internal drive
to work with.

FWIW, I've run a DB on an external Firewire drive (Lacie) for the past 18 months and I've had no problems whatsoever.

ditto, but I haven't (and don't plan to try) unplugging it while connected
to the database!

we don't plan on unplugging it either<g>.

But I don't think that a firewire connection is the same as a USB
connection.

Anyone have any experience with USB external harddrives (ignoring the
unplugging issue)?

Alex,

We use a external USB drive only for onsite backups. When we backup we
normally do one offsite and one onsite backup. There is a huge performance
penalty using an external USB drive to store your actual database. The data
transfer is much slower. They make great backup devices and even work
pretty well if you travel with a laptop, but I certainly wouldn't use one as
a primary database drive.

Regards,

Michael Gould

If you can ensure that the plug is not pulled and that the device chosen
will adhere to the requirements in the techdoc
http://www.ianywhere.com/developer/t..._remotely.html,
there should be no problems (as indicated by others in the post).

I would recommend that if you go this route to be extra cautious
initially with backups and validations until you are comfortable that
the device and the drivers are stable.
