No. The live backup functionality is built into the dbbackup executable.

Thanks.

Is there any difference in making a backup of a running database between
the backup statement and dbbackup?.

The BACKUP statement runs in the database server. So this is a server-side backup. The dbbackup
utility make a connection with the database and performs the backup. So this is a what I would call
a client-side backup.

Just to add:
Starting with ASA 9.0.1, you can use the dbbackup utility with option -s
which will also do a server-side backup.
