Default 64 bit Windows - service freezing - 03-22-2006 , 09:55 AM

Running ASA build 8.03.5336 on a Dell powerdge 2800 with 2
Xeon
3.0gb 2mb processors with 4gb of Ram Dual channel raid
Controller with 5 HD's.Windows 2003 x64 Standard edition
fully patched.

Running a service connected to a database application with
80
users connected through two thin client servers.

Every 48 hours (weekdays) or so the service freezes, locking
out all users and not allowing new connections.

When attempting to stop the service either through Sybase
Central or the Windows Services screen the stopping of
service hangs. Can only be stopped with the process killed.

No errors created or log entries made. Service starts
correctly after being killed.

ANy ideas on what could cause this and suitable resolutions?

Do you use anything like external stored procedures, Java stored procs
or possibly proxy tables?

Can you leave an ISQL session open and when the freezing occurs see if
you can issue "sa_conn_info()" and "sa_locks()" to determine the nature
of the freezing?

When the service hangs, is here a particular thing that's running? Like
Greg said a stored procedure etc. Also check the locks as above. You
may also monitor the memory and CPU usage, it just could be that the
service is getting so busy that it's non-responsive. In any case, this
seems to be application related. Also check the windows event logs for
error reporting. Finally, make a Physical memory and HDD check to
ensure it's not due to faulty hardware (that should be reported in the
Windows event log). Wala.

This has occurred once more today and although I am not tech support
for the company running our software they have granted me remote access
to look into this on it's next failure. The IT guy for the company has
said that he has seen nothing out of the ordinary or wrong at the time
of failure. I will be able to supply better details and other
installed applications next time.

Thanks all for the help so far.
