Default 5.5 to 9.0 and ODBC driver version - 12-16-2003 , 10:27 AM

I have read the chapter on Upgrading Version 5 Applications and am still a
little confused. I know it is possible in a client/server application that
uses the odbc to upgrade the server to 9.0, leaving the data at 5.5.

However, can I still use the 5.5 ODBC or must I change to the 9.0 ODBC
driver?

Thank You.

Bill

You must update the client software. The communication technology changed
between SA 5 and ASA 6. You will need ASA6 or later client software for
connectivity to an ASA9 server.

FWIW you should absolutely positively unload and reload your database
into Version 9 format for performance reasons. And when you're done,
check that the setting of the OPTIMIZATION_GOAL is 'all-rows'.

Ok, Just to be absolutely sure here. You are saying that I must use a
version 9 odbc driver to connect a version 5 database to a version 9 server.
Correct?

Thank you for the response. I do intend to upgrade the database. There are
some compatibility issues that require some changes to our software so we
were hoping to do it in steps. That is, upgrade all users to the latest
server version then upgrade their databases and our application.

Yes, you must use a v9 odbc driver to connect to a v9 asa server, the v5
odbc driver will not see the server.

However, as mentioned elsewhere in this thread, running a v5 database on a
v9 server will result in a number of operational inefficiencies, and it
would be best to reload it to take advantage of the newer features.
