Default Unable to view Object Explorer - 08-21-2009 , 06:38 PM

Hi - Initially I got an Registered Server Exception when I opened the SQL
Server amangement studio, but after I installed SP1 for SQL server 2008 that
error went away but now I do not see the Object Explorer window. However, I
do see the object explorer details without any problem. How should I go about
resolving this issue?

I have already uninstalled and reinstalled SQL server client
tools/Management object client etc. and this didnt' help. However, I have not
tried to uninstall entire SQL server 2008.

I am running Window 7 Enterprise x64 RTM. I also have Visual Studio 2008 SP1
installed.

Please let me know if there is a solution. Also let me know if uninstalling
and reinstallining it will help.

Thanks!

Did you try hitting F8 - or View | Object Explorer? Have you looked along
the sides/bottom of the application to see if it is docked in a non normal
place and hidden?

I had this happen to me once before (though I will admit I did not go
through the hassle of uninstalling and reinstalling). What exactly happens
when you hit F8 or go to View | Object Explorer? Did you try: Window |
Reset Window Layout?

Hi Rd,
Please also check if you can manually add the menu item according to the
following steps:
1. In SSMS, click Tools->Customize;
2. Select Commands tab, click Rearrange Commands...
3. Select View in Menu Bar list
4. If Object Explorer is not there, click the Add... button, select View,
choose Object Explorer in the Commands list and click OK.

You may also try clear your cached settings file to see if it helps. You
can first close your SSMS, copy the files in the folder
C:\Users\<username>\Documents\SQL Server Management Studio\Settings to the
other place and then remove all the files in this folder. Then re-open your
management studio.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,
Charles Wang
