Default SQL 2008 or 2008R2 Management Tools on Windows 7? - 05-30-2010 , 02:52 AM

Hi,

is there a possibility to install just the management tools of SQL 2008 or
2008R2 on Windows7 32bit?
My installation fails with both versions.

Best regards
Herbert

That should indeed be possible.

That's too bad, but without further information there is little I can

Default SQL 2008 Management Tools on Windows 7 Fail to install - 09-16-2010 , 01:10 AM

Hi All,

I too have tried to install SQL 2008 and then SQL 2008 R2 Management tools to Windows 7 Enterprise x86.

I get the below error everytime....

Another version of Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 has been detected on this system that must be updated to SP1. Please update all Visual Studio 2008 installations to SP1 level, by visiting Microsoft Update.

The thing is i havent installed Visual Studio 2008 - unless one of the other applications I have installed use it? I have also gone to Microsoft Update as mentioned - and installed every patch there is - there are no outstanding patches for windows 7 at all now.

Even weirder - is that the checks before the install process actually happens says that Visual Studio 2008 is either not installed or is already SP1 ... so why would it then complain on the next stage that there is a version already there that is not SP1?

I could install these tools fine on Windows XP - but i thought i would take a leap and install Win7 in preparation for our ERP upgrade that will happen soon.

I have even downloaded the visual studio 2008 SP1 - and it tells me that visual studio is not installed. Which makes me thing the error message is a red herring.

Any ideas would be gratefully accepted...

That one I can answer: if you would have VS 2008 RTM on the machine and
then installed the SQL 2008 tools, your VS installation would be damaged.

Now, that is a little more interesting, and for which I have no good answer
(and don't have the time to research right now). But probably there is
something on your machine that makes the SQL install think that you have
VS. A tool like Process Monitor from www.sysinternals.com could help you
to diagnose the problem.
