Default service pack for tools? - 01-15-2010 , 11:16 AM

Hello:

On an XP workstation, I would like to install the Client Tools for SQL 2005
Standard, so that the end user can utilize SQL Management Studio for running
queries. (SQL 2005, of course, is already installed on a separate server
box).

Do I need to subsequently install a SQL service pack on this workstation
just for the tools, just like I did at the server? Or, can I simply just
install the tools?

The service packs usually update the tools as well as the server, so run
the service pack on the clients to keep them up to date.

Yes, you absolutely need to update the client tools. Especially if the user
is going to do anything at all with maintenance plans - as there are
definite issues when using SSMS un-patched against a post SP2 server.
