Default The Sequel to "Installing SQL Client Tools" - 08-01-2009 , 02:22 PM

Hello:

I successfully installed the SQL 2005 client tools using the 32-bit CD #2.
It was not without a few surprises, however, and I am hoping that someone
here can shed some light on my observations.

The first install I did was on a Terminal Server box. Since running the
file "SQLTools_Run.exe" brought up an error saying that it could not find the
"path", I instead chose to run "Setup.exe". It worked perfectly. I was able
to install the Management Tools, Business Intelligence Development Studio,
and Books Online.

Then, I installed the Tools twice more--on two Citrix boxes that is. I
installed using the same means--using the "Setup.exe" file. But, the install
"bombed". It refused to install the SQL Native Client or the Workstation
Components. I resolved this matter by running the "SQLTools_Run.exe" file.
It worked fine. I was able to open the SQL Server Management Studio that I
needed and everything.

But, unlike the Terminal Server install, I could not see the Business
Intelligence Development Studio shortcut. It is not really necessary anyway,
for my purposes, to have Business Intelligence Development Studio on these
stations. I am curious, though.

When I went back in to the install "process" afterward and tried to install
the Business Intelligence Development Studio, the install screen said that
this is already installed! But, again, the shortcut is not there. And, when
I double-clicked on the "devenv.exe" file that runs this shortcut normally,
it brought up no reference to SQL Reporting Services. What came on the
screen was just the Visual Studio.

I had read that installing SQL Client Tools is an interesting undertaking.
You would think that it would be just as simply as double-clicking on a file.

So, why is Business Intelligence Studio not on those two Citrix boxes? And,
why did I have to go back and forth between using "Setup.exe" and
"SQLRun_Tools.exe" on the Citrix boxes? Why did the Terminal Server install
go so well vs. the Citrix installs?

It could be that some flavor of visual studio was already installed.

Well, it usually is. But the file to double-click is splash.hta on the
first CD. That's the regular way of running Setup.

You should be able to run the MSI SQL Native client standalone though;
this is documented in Books Online.
