Once you sort out your install issues, you can do a backup and restore. Be
sure to check out sp_change_users_login in the BOL.

Assuming the installation on Vista goes through... how do I move an existing
databse (table structure and data to the new installation) as I plan to get
rid of the XP machine?

We'd need more information on how your backup and restore attempts failed.
