This problem has just started happening and I'm looking for clues ...
anything to help me troubleshoot.

When I allow the mouse pointer to hover over the Object Browser menu
item in the Tools submenu of Query Analyzer (version 800.194):


Object Browser -> [mouse is hovering over this item]
Object Search ->
------------------
Manage Indexes
Manage Statistics
------------------
Options
Customize


the Object Browser submenu (shown below) takes 60 seconds to appear.

Everything else on my PC appears to be working fine. All the other menus
in QA work instantly, and QA is installed locally. I've reinstalled the
client apps from the SQL Server CD: no improvement.

Is a remote network resource being contacted when the mouse merely
hovers over the Object Browser menu item on the Tools menu?

How about the instance you connected when this is happening? The only reason
for this delay I can think of is one or more items in that menu tries to get
some data from a remote instance and the connection is not fast enough or
the data it tries to obtain is too much or something...
