Default Installing SQL Client Tools - 07-31-2009 , 09:09 AM

Hello:

We have implemented a 64-bit SQL 2005 Server Standard. We need to install
the client tools on three 32-bit workstations.

To do so, would we use the 64-bit client tools or the 32-bit? Would these
32-bit tools be on a 32-bit CD? Are they downloadable?

Any issues on installing on Terminal Server or Citrix?

Can any user access these tools? Or, does it have to be a SQL admin? I
want to make sure that the user can easily access the tools.

The tools are mostly 32-bit, even when installed on x64. But they should be
on the installation media you already have. You can't download the tools
anywhere except from dedicated places like MSDN, Empower, volume licensing,
etc.

(Just to be clear, I mean that you can download them as part of a full
install media, not on their own.)

As Aaron says, there are no 64-bit tools (save the command-line ones).
However, if memory serves, you need 32-bit media to be able to install
them on the workstations, because the 64-bit Setup does not like to run
32-bit. This issue applies to SQL 2005; I believe it has been corrected in
SQL 2008.

Any user can use the tools, but he can of course only perform tasks for
which he has permission in SQL Server. Running queries, no problem. Running
Profiler, on the other hand, requires at least ALTER TRACE on the server
he connect to.
