Default Can I use Management Studio with Query Analyzer on the same machine? - 02-06-2009 , 02:30 PM

Hello,

I currently have SQL Enterprise Manager and Query Analyzer tools installed on
my machine for which I use to administer SQL 2000 based Database servers.

Now that I have SQL 2005 Database servers, can I install Management Studio on
my machine and still be able to use EM & Query Analyzer for SQL2K and
Management Studio for SQL2K5?

Thanks,

Sam

Yes, I've done this several times, with no problems. I even have a
machine with 2000, 2005 and 2008 tools. The 2005 and 2008 tools has
some problems co-existing, but I have not yet find a problem with the
2000 tools.

I would not use Enterprise Manager any more once you have Management Studio
installed. There are likely some things that cause some conflicts when
side-by-side (though Tibor seems to have only good experiences with this, I
remember seeing a lot of people out in the newsgroups with problems), but
even if it works correctly all the time, why bother? What does EM do that
SSMS does not?

Some people prefer the Query Analyzer interface but I stopped using it long
ago. You can use them side by side much more reliably than EM + SSMS, but
since you can manage 2000 instances with SSMS, I'm not sure why you would
need both. An exception might be DTS packages, where in SSMS you get the
SSIS designer instead. If you're not using that I'd be inclined to throw
the old tools out.
