Backup and VSS Writer

Default Backup and VSS Writer - 08-31-2008 , 10:19 AM





I am using SQL Server Express 2005 on a Windows Server 2008 server. I
noticed that the included Windows Server Backup fails if the SQL Server
VSS Writer is running. I stop it, backup runs fine.

Is that the way it's supposed to work? Also, VSS Writer service is set
to Automatic, should I just disable it, is it meant for something I
don't need/use?

Personally I wouldn't use a file-based backup process to back up SQL Server
databases. I would use BACKUP DATABASE directly against SQL Server.

In any case, you can read a lot about VSS writer here, and may even figure
out why it is stopping Windows backup. (Not mentioning what "fails" means
makes it pretty hard for any of us to guess.)

Personally I wouldn't use a file-based backup process to back up SQL Server
databases. I would use BACKUP DATABASE directly against SQL Server.

In any case, you can read a lot about VSS writer here, and may even figure
out why it is stopping Windows backup. (Not mentioning what "fails" means
makes it pretty hard for any of us to guess.)
