I have SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition (without SP) on Windows Server 2003
Standard Edition SP2 and try to update it to SQL Server 2008. However, the
installation fails on the 'Setup Support Files' stage. I receive the
following error message:

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Setup
------------------------------

The following error has occurred:

Unable to open Windows Installer file
'D:\x86\setup\sql_engine_core_inst_msi\sql_engine_ core_inst.msi'.

Windows Installer error message: The system cannot open the device or file
specified.

I copied the installation file from the SQL Server 2008 ISO image to a local
folder and run the installation program from it.

You copied only the installation file, not the entire image? That does
not seem like a good idea.

Else I would suspect bad media or a bad download.

I downloaded the 'en_sql_server_2008_standard_x86_x64_dvd_x14-89155.iso' file
again and checked CRC of this file with crc305.exe and the file seems to be
OK. Then, I extracted all the files from this ISO image using the 7z
archiver. The problem is still the same.

Maybe you should try buring the image to a blank DVD?

The server does not have a DVD drive. Therefore, I used a CD emulator and it
solved the problem.
