Yes, unfortunately Services applet lists "SQL Server (SQLExpress)" as an installed service. Are you sure SQL Server Express is still installed? 1) do you see a service for it listed in the Services applet? 2) the presence of the program files folder does not mean Express is installed. The uninstaller leaves that folder intact because you might have user databases there. If you are sure the program is actually still installed (even if it is not listed under Add/Remove Programs; is the presence of the program files folder really your only evidence?), did you try the Windows Installer Clean-up Utility or MSIZAP? Linchi talks about MSIZAP here: http://sqlblog.com/blogs/linchi_shea...-is-your-frien d.aspx And the WICU is linked to here: http://sqlblog.com/blogs/aaron_bertr...-xp-sp3-msxml6 -sp2-sql-server-debacle.aspx |

Ok, so next step is already outlined for you: try the Windows Installer Clean-Up Utility. Though I am amazed that you have both an engine and tools installed and neither is showing up in Add/Remove Programs (anyway the SQL Express instance will not block installation, but the tools certainly will). My guess is there are other things that you have done to this machine that you're not telling us, or don't remember, or don't know happened. The problem is that the individual that installed Visual Studio on this machine accepted the defaults and allowed SQL Server Express to be installed. When SQL Server Express is installed this way there is nothing added to Add/Remove Programs to remove it. You should use what Aaron has already stated (msizap and/or Windows Installer Clean-Up) to remove it. |

I guess he should be able to run the VS Setup to reconfigure his selection of VS features? -- Erland Sommarskog, SQL Server MVP, esquel (AT) sommarskog (DOT) se Links for SQL Server Books Online: SQL 2008: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/sqlserver/cc514207.aspx SQL 2005: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/sqlserver/bb895970.aspx SQL 2000: http://www.microsoft.com/sql/prodinf...ons/books.mspx |
