Default SQL2k5 x64 on Windows 2k8 x64 - 07-13-2009 , 10:40 AM

I'm prepping a server for SQL 2k5 x64 running on Windows 2k8 x64. What can I
do to performance tune this server so that it runs as fast as possible. So
far only the OS, SP's and AV (Symantec Endpoint) is on it. What should I do
with the page file, etc, that can make this thing really screem?

If you configure SQL Server properly and are not running other apps on the
server as well you should not really do a lot of paging in the first place.
Most of the default settings for Win2K8 are fine and you will get most of
your performance gains by tuning SQL Server and the I/O than the OS.

I guess a good follow up question for that is, what can we do to tune SQL
server?? I'm not a SQL guy and we just lost our DBA. What are some basic
steps we can do to get this thing running well?

Well that depends totally on what the issues are. What's good for you may
be totally different than what someone else needs. If you really have issues
you should consult a good SQL Server consultant who specializes in perf
tuning.

OK, the plan is for this to house 4 DB's for very different apps. Blackberry
Enterprise Server, will probably see the most traffic. If we do start to see
a degredation in performance what are some things you may recommend?

Again performance degradation can come in many ways and the recommended
solution will be different for each cause. But these articles should
definitely get you started, especially the first two:
