I am trying to upgrade an existing installation of SQL Server 2008
Enterprise Edition to the latest SQL Server R2 November CTP and it
fails. The upgrade fails during the system checks and includes an error
message "the specified edition upgrade is not supported". The upgrade
documentation indicates that this is a valid upgrade path but it does
not work. I tried to do the upgrade from the command prompt and it also
failed. The command prompt upgrade command I used is shown below:
d:\Setup.exe /q /ACTION=Upgrade /INSTANCENAME=INST2008 pid="SQL Server
Enterprise Evaluation" /IAcceptSQLServerLicenseTerms |
Books Online says that you upgrade from Enterprise 2008 to
Enterprise or Datascentre 2008. However, you cannot upgrade to
Enterprise Evaluation, which is what you are trying to do.
I don't know if it is possible to install Enterprise Edition of the
Nov CTP. In any case, I would not recommend trying to upgrade an
existing instance to a beta version. There is no guarantee that there
will be an upgrade path from the CTP to RTM.
