Default SQL Server 2000 SP3a installation problems. - 07-16-2003 , 04:45 PM

I ran into the same message today:

Error running script: sp3_serv_uni.sql (1)

trying to install SP3 over Enterprise Evaluation Edition,
with Win2k SP3. I'm baffled too. Anybody have any help
on this?

Well to start off, some background.

I'm a UF student studying software engineering and have
this stuff
installed on my system so I can test asp.net
applications. I'm
currently running Windows XP Professional SP1, updated to
the gills. I
have SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition installed, and it
hasn't been
updated until this.

The first installation problem I Came across was
the "Unable to validate
logged on user" and "setup was unable to validate the
state of the
server". I solved this by starting the service up in
single client
mode. But once it gets farther, during the installation
after it's
installed MDAC and gotten to the scripts, I get this in
my sqlsp.log:

15:17:02 C:\sql2ksp3\x86\BINN\osql.exe -Slpc:<<<MY
MACHINE NAME (not
giving that out)>>> -b -n -d master -o "C:\Program
Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\MSSQL\install\sp3_serv_uni.out" -i
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\MSSQL\install\sp3_serv_uni.sql" -Usa -P"
15:17:03 Process Exit Code: (1)
15:17:05 Error running script: sp3_serv_uni.sql (1)
15:17:05 C:\Windows\Temp\SqlSetup\Bin\scm.exe -Silent 1 -
Action 6
-Service MSSQLSERVER
15:17:20 Process Exit Code: (0)
15:17:20 Action CleanUpInstall:
15:17:20 Installation Failed.

So it stops with Error running script: sp3_serv_uni.sql
(1)

I've tried numerous different things to solve this, and
no information
I've seen anywhere has helped. I looked at Microsoft's
page, and they
said this issue is "fixed" in sp3a, which is precisely
what I'm using.
I've done the MDAC hotfix, turned on TCP/IP in the SQL
Network Config,
turned on DTC, Analysis Services, and a few other
things. I'm stumped
now though.

Also peculiar:
If I look in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\MSSQL\Install
the sp3_serv.u1ni.out, I see

[DBNETLIB]General network error. Check your network
documentation.
[DBNETLIB]ConnectionRead (WrapperRead()).

This file having been updated a few seconds after the
error.

Thank you in advance for any help you provide.

Bruce,

Are you sure its a Enterprise Evaluation Edition? I ask because its not
possible to install Service packs(except for the recent SP3a) on Eval
Edtn.See

INF: Cannot Apply Service Pack to Evaluation Edition

Anyways, for the "spn_serv_uni.sql (1)" error, see

I solved this problem on my own a while back. It was a supersockets
error if I remember correctly. All I did was add the matching network
libraries from the client network utility as were in the server network
utility. I had nothing, including disabled shared memory protocol.
That was what was causing the error. After that, all 10 or however many
scripts worked just fine. But he is right, you DO need to have a
non-evaluation edition to install a SP.

Bruce, Are you a student? I can't imagine you using an evaluation
edition for commercial purposes so I'm assuming you're learning. If
you're a college student or POSSIBLY high school student you can get
sql server developer edition either free or hugely discounted. It
doesn't support everything that EE does but gets the job done.
Chances are you're not a student, but if you know a student you could
have them check their bookstore, they might be able to still get you a
good discount.
