Default SQL 2008 on Win7 - can't install - 06-28-2010 , 01:27 PM

I'm trying to install SQL 2008 R2 from my Action Pack subscription on my
Windows 7 Home Premium x64 box. The setup doesn't say it's not supported,
so I'm assuming it is supported. All is good until about 3/4 way thru the
actual install when I get this message:

The following error has occurred:
Wait on the Database Engine recovery handle failed. Check the SQL Server
error log for potential causes.

The DB Engine, Integration Services and Reporting Services fail on the
install.

I've checked the Internet and the causes don't seem to apply to me. I'm not
trying to upgrade SQL 2005 (I only have the tools and BIDS installed), nor
have I changed the sa login. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Andre

I don't have any direct suggestions, but in
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log you find
the logs from the setup attempts. These logs are very verbose and by
no means easy to read, but if you are lucky something obvious stands
towards the end of the log.

Also, since the error messages suggests that you should check the
SQL Server error log, look in
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.xxx\MSSQL\Log\ERRORLOG
(xxx is the instance ID of your instance. Note that if you installed
32-bit SQL Server, you should look in Program Files (x86).

Thanks for the reply Erland. I wondered if it might have something to do
with Win 7 Home, so I ran the anytime upgrade and am now running Win 7 Pro.
The install still fails. When I try to only install the DB Engine I get
this error:
Could not find the Database Engine startup handle.

Looking at the logs, this is at the very bottom. If this is indeed the
cause of the error, how do I fix it?
Error result: -2061893609
Slp: Result facility code: 1306
Slp: Result error code: 23
Slp: Sco: Attempting to create base registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, machine
Slp: Sco: Attempting to open registry subkey
Slp: Sco: Attempting to open registry subkey
Software\Microsoft\PCHealth\ErrorReporting\DW\Inst alled
Slp: Sco: Attempting to get registry value DW0201
Slp: Submitted 1 of 1 failures to the Watson data repository

If this isn't the error, would it help if I attached the detail.txt file
here?

I tried for plan B which was to install a VM to install Win2008/SQL2008 on,
but Windows Virtual PC doesn't support Win2008. I tried VMWare Player but I
can't create a 64-bit VM, so I'd really like to get SQL installed on my Win
7 system - which is 64bit but apparently not the VT technology that is
required for a VM box.

Thanks for your help.

Andre

I think the above is after the error. Thet is, the few lines before
Error result may tell us something. (But to be honest, most likely not.)

Yes, feel free to attach the file, but no promises.

When it comes to Win7 I'm definitely not the right guy. I'm clinging
to Vista, XP and Win2003.

Erland,

It turns out that the version of SQL I'm trying to install isn't supported
on Win 7. It's absolutely amazing that all the checks passed, and I get 3/4
thru my installation before it errors out. Major screw-up by Microsoft as
far as I'm concerned. Thanks for your time, and please cross this one off
your list.

Thanks, Andre
