Default Having the same problem - 06-22-2010 , 06:08 PM

I'm having this same problem with SQL Server 2008 R2. I get a warning when installing that has this message, and and any time I start SQL Server Management Studio the message appears and prevents Management Studio from running.

I have no idea how to go about fixing this. Hoping someone on here can provide some insight, or at least point me in the right direction.

I would try right-clicking the directories mentioned in the error
messages and fiddle around with the permissions and OK, and hope
that fixes the ACLs.

Default Update: Got it working - 06-24-2010 , 01:41 PM

So I finally got this working. I'm still not sure what the "non-canonical" verbiage is referrring to, but here' s how I was able to fix it in my environment.

Its ultimately a security issue that seems to result from having 1 version of SQL Server installed (in this case SQL Server 2008 Express) and then installing another instance in addition to it (in my case, SQL Server 2008 Developer). Something happens with the directories that the two instances share that causes a security problem.

If you navigate to the directory in question, right click it, and open up the security options tab, you'll likely find that the account you're logged in as doesn't have full control over the directory. Edit the settings for your account to have full access and you should be good to go. Worked for me on Win 7 x64.
