Default Set up project for SQL Server - 07-01-2003 , 07:53 PM

Hi
I am trying to create set up program for MSDE I copied all the MSM modules
to my harddrive from SQL server disk.
Created Set up project. Added all this modules to it but VS shows me that I
am missing dependences - all of them. I looked through all the files and I
have every single file they warn me about. What do I do wrong?
Thanks
Shimon.

Hi Shimon,

Generally, Microsoft does not recommend using merge modules. Desktop

(MSDE 2000) SP3a provides merge modules to support existing applications

written to call the MSDE 2000 Setup utility instead of directly consuming
the MSDE 2000 merge modules.

Could you let me know the detailed error message? What tool do you use to
build setup application? Is it Visual Studio Installer or Visual Studio
NET?
I am using Visual Studio.NET but I downloaded Wise Installer for .NET
(evaluation and it gave me the same result). I looked through the
information you gave me first I thought that I need to change LanguageId -
Propertyies Window in VS.NET doesn't show any language for the modules. I
got ocra.exe but it looks like the language is not an issue. So I am back to
where I started.

Hi Shimon,

I tried to download SQL Server 2000 SP3a and tested with the issue. I could
not reproduce the issue when I build the project in VS.NET.

When packaging MSDE merge modules, we add the Merge Modules from the
MSDE\MSM folder that you need. These have dependencies on the language
specific MSDE\MSM\1033 folder merge modules, but those dependent resource
files should be
added automatically when Visual Studio.NET detects the dependency, when it
looks in the SearchPath folder specified.

However if it cannot find those dependent merge modules, the setup project
cannot be built.

To set the search path for the project to the folder in which the MSDE
merge modules reside, we would refer to 325004.KB.EN-US: HOW TO: Author
MSDE 2000 Setup Packages by Using Visual Studio .NET.

a. Select the setup project in Solution Explorer.

b. In the Properties window, locate the entry for SearchPath.

NOTE: If the Properties window is not open, on the View menu, click
Properties Window.

c. Type the full path to the location of the MSDE merge modules.
Typically, this path is <X>:\MSDE\MSM and X:\MSDE\MSM\1033 where <X> is the
drive letter of your CD drive.

Hi Shimon,

I downloaded SP3a file to C:\tmp. The directory structure is like:
C:\tmp
SP3a
MSI
MSM
1033
Setup

The SearchPath is: c:\tmp\SP3a\MSM\1033;C:\tmp\SP3a\MSM

I add all merge modules under C:\tmp\SP3a\MSM to the project. I did not see
any warnings regarding missing dependency.

If you downloaded SP3a from
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/downloads/2000/sp3.asp, and you have performed
the similar steps to mine, I think the problem may be due to Visual Studio
.NET 2002, since the problem occurs when you build the project. Does the
problem occur with a new Setup project? Have you tried to repair Visual
Studio .NET 2002, or uninstall it and reinstall it?

I have no idea what is the problem. I went through all the steps and read
all the articles but I still get the same warnings but my project build.
And
I get various errors during installation.

Hi Shimon,

I tried to download SQL Server 2000 SP3a and tested with the issue. I
could
not reproduce the issue when I build the project in VS.NET.

When packaging MSDE merge modules, we add the Merge Modules from the
MSDE\MSM folder that you need. These have dependencies on the language
specific MSDE\MSM\1033 folder merge modules, but those dependent
resource
files should be
added automatically when Visual Studio.NET detects the dependency, when
it
looks in the SearchPath folder specified.

However if it cannot find those dependent merge modules, the setup
project
cannot be built.

Typically, this path is <X>:\MSDE\MSM and X:\MSDE\MSM\1033 where <X> is
the
drive letter of your CD drive.

Hi Bill,

Forgive me for asking this. But what is merge module? Please let me
know.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Shimon,

I suggest that you first check if you can run MSDE 2000 Setup.exe
successfully using command line (not through merge module). If you can
install MSDE 2000 successfully without being prompted. Then we can use that
command and create a custom action in the VS.NET setup project. To create a
Custom Action, refer to the following article.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en...kthroughCreati
ngCustomAction.asp

Hi Shimon,

As I mentioned earlier, we do not recommend installing using merge
modules.
Could you try to use MSDE 2000 Setup to install MSDE 2000? Refer to the
following link to install a new instance of MSDE 2000.

http://support.microsoft.com/default...epacks/SQL/200
0/SP3ReadMe.asp#_3467465_installing_a_new_instance_o f_msd_cuy1

In addition, since you already have a SQL Server 2000 instance, is it
default instance or named instance? Notice we cannot install two default
instances or two named instances with identical names on the same
system.

Thanks
I'll need some time to try it out.

Hi Shimon,

I suggest that you first check if you can run MSDE 2000 Setup.exe
successfully using command line (not through merge module). If you can
install MSDE 2000 successfully without being prompted. Then we can use
that
command and create a custom action in the VS.NET setup project. To create
a
Custom Action, refer to the following article.

Hi Shimon,

I suggest that you first check if you can run MSDE 2000 Setup.exe
successfully using command line (not through merge module). If you can
install MSDE 2000 successfully without being prompted. Then we can use
that
command and create a custom action in the VS.NET setup project. To
create
a
Custom Action, refer to the following article.
