Default Recommended install order SQL 2008 Developer, Visual Studio Pro 2008 - 07-26-2009 , 01:14 AM

Is there a recommended installation order for SQL 2008, VS 2008 and their
service packs?

I thought I read something about problems with these two products.

I think the best is to install VS 2008, apply SP1 for VS2008, and then
install SQL Server. Beware that VS2008 by default installs SQL Server
Express 2005; you may want to uncheck that choice.

I should also work if you install SQL 2008 first. What does *not* work
is to install VS2008, and then install SQL 2008 without first applying
VS 2008 SP1. In this case the installation of SQL 2008 will not agree
to run.

My approach would be to get Visual Studio 2008 and all its service packs
installed first. Make sure to uncheck SQL Server on the component selection
screen. Then install SQL Server and its service packs.

Thank you Erland, especially for the note about SQL Express.

Patrick.
