Default RAM requirements - 06-07-2005 , 08:16 PM

I'm ordering a new server for my SQL Server platform. I'm sure by most of
your standards, it's a small installation with less than 1GB of data. Right
now I'm looking at a SuperMicro SuperServer 5014C-T. The guy I buy my
hardware from recommended 2GB of RAM. I see the 5014C-T supports up to 4GB.

I asked him to put in 4GB just because I'd rather do it now than have to
take it offline later to do it. Is this overkill, or is it smart?

Also, my hardware guy mentioned some weird problem with the Intel E7221
chipset in this box where it can only recognize 3GB. Anyone ever heard of
this?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Hi

If you are using Standard Edition of Windows Server 2000/2003 and Standard
Edition of SQL Server, you will only be able to use 2GB for SQL Server. The
rest the OS can use.

Check with the hardware vendor on chipset specific issues.

As Mike said, SQL2000 Standard will only use 2GB of RAM. If no other
applications will be running on the server, you are wasting the extra
memory....
