Default Installing SQL Server 2005 on Vista Home Premium - IIS error needhelp - 07-24-2009 , 05:12 AM

Hi,

I have successfully installed IIS 7.0 on my laptop and made the
screen shots of the IIS and its components that are installed on my
notebook. When I said successfully installed, I tried following and
was successful

1).http://localhost/ - I got the IIS page opened

2).When I typed inetmgr in the search box it pop opened the IIS
Manager

Does it mean I have a successful installation? If so, after these
steps I still get the below IIS error when I try installing the SQL
Server 2005

"IIS Feature Requirement (Warning)

Messages

IIS Featuer Requirement

Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) is etiher not
installed or is disabled. IIS is required by some SQL Server features.
With out IIS, some SQL Server features will not be available for
installation. To install all SQL Server featuers, install IIS from Add
or Remove Programs in Control Panel or enable the IIS service through
the Control Panel if is is already installed, and then run SQL Server
Setup again. For a list of featuers that depend on IIS. See Features
Supported by Editions of SQL Server in Books Online."

I restarted my notebook twice but still get the IIS error during the
installation process. Am I missing still missing some thing during the
IIS installation process?

I am not sure if I just go a head and install the SQL Server 2005 with
IIS error and later on down load and install the SQL Server 2005 SP2
will that fix this error? Will it fix the error?

The other question I have is will I be able to use SSRS on my Home
Premium note book if at all I was successful with this whole IIS 7.0
and SQL Server 2005 installation with out the IIS error issue.

Any kind of help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Do you *need* reporting services? If so, maybe you could use SQL Server
2008 instead of 2005, which IIRC does not require IIS. If not, then maybe
uncheck it during installation (or just ignore the warning... It is not
blocking you from running installation)?

If you need reporting services and you need to run 2005 then I suggest going
through all the messages and links in this thread:

Aaron,

After going through all of these links which I had gone through all
ready, I have concluded that installation of IIS 7.0 on Vista Home
Premium is not possible because of unavailability of the below option

Windows Authentication (Not available on Windows Vista Basic/Premium)

in Vista Home Premium. So we can't install IIS and hence we can't run
SSRS on Vista Home Premium.

Is my conclusiong right?

May be I will have to consider installing a Virtual PC which is
available for free and install XP Prof on it and then try installing
the SQL Server 2005 on it. Please advice.

Also trying to find VS 2008 and SQL Server 2008 for cheap for practise
purposes. Is there a place online that I could buy for cheap? Will I
be able install VS 2008 and SQL Server 2008 on Vista Home Premium
instead of spending time installing SQL Server 2005?

Thanks,

L

You are right, you cannot install Reporting Services on Vista Home Premium
Edition because there's no Windows Authentication component for IIS in this
edition of Windows Vista.

Thanks for the quick replies. The another questions rises in my mind
is how different or advanced developing Reports in SQL Server 2008
compared to SQL Server 2005. In other words the knowledge of SSRS in
SQL Server 2005 will help wade through the SQL Server 2008 RS or it is
a whole different new approach?
You'll want to ask in a reporting services newsgroup forum, where you'll get
much more specialized folks who know the answer.
