Default Installation Issue - 06-07-2005 , 11:17 PM

When trying to install SQL Server Enterprise Edition I get this error message:

"Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition server component is not
supported on this operating system. Only clients will be available for
installation."

My operating system is Windows Server 2000. Winver reports: "Version 5.0
(Build 2195: Service Pack 4)".

If you are using Windows 2000 prof. you are are not allowed to install the
Enterprise Edition on the machine. Another potion would be to install the
Developer edition which has just about the same feature but is for testing
purposes only.

I am using Windows 2000 Server. I am not using Windows 2000 Professional.

Here's what's in my registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\ProductOptions
ProductSuite: Small Business Small Business(Restricted) Terminal Server
ProductType: LanmanNT

Here's what's in the registry of another of my machines that's got Windows
2000 Professional installed:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\ProductOptions
ProductSuite: <empty>
ProductType: WinNT

For some reason, the SQL Server installer doesn't seem to recongnise my
Windows 2000 Server as a server (isn't this what the key value LanmanNT
indicates?). Is it possible that my registry has become corrupted or that the
SQL server installer is just buggy?

Solved the problem:

I had installed MS Project Central prior to trying to install SQL Server.
Project Central installed MSDE (MS SQL Desktop Edition). I uninstalled MSDE
and Project Central.

Additionally, I had to install SQL Server from the SBS CD set. This didn't
complain about the "wrong OS". (Curiously though. It DID complain before I
uninstalled MSDE!)

Everything seems to work now (except of course Project Central - I had to
blow that away).
