Default How to clean up / removing ALL sql 2005 instances whatsoever? - 03-23-2009 , 08:09 PM

My XP SP3 box has run tons of sql server 2005 installations, from
express to standard to enterprise (possibly) over the years... the
Windows Add/Remove utility has run out of its game, doing so from
registry, did not seem to have covered/removing all instances (may I
didn't know exact steps etc.). How?

Thanks.

What do you mean "run out of its game"? Instances should remove fine from
Add/Remove Programs. Of course it won't delete MDF/LDF files for user
databases you have created (that would be bad). What exactly do you see as
not being removed?

All the instances are still showing up in the NT\Windows Services
console. It seems certain registries haven't been removed
accordingly. And a new instance installation fail. Box OS: XP SP3.
Log below. Thanks.

"The SQL Server service failed to start" is a generic error message. You
should review the log files as the message refers. Also, check out the
Windows Event Logs.

Also, you mentioned installation of Enterprise Edition of SQL Server 2005 on
Windows XP; technically you can not do that, because by design it's not
allowed to run this edition of SQL Server 2005 on Client OSs. So what
edition is this that fails to install now?

If it's not Enterprise Edition, what account do you use as the service
account of this instance?
