I bought a new notebook (HP Pavilion dv4040us) and am trying to install SQL
Server 2000 Personal. Upon installation, it gives me the following error:
"A previous program installation created pending file operation on the
installation machine. You must restart the computer"

After I restart the computer and try to install, I get the same error. I
have done this install on notebooks before without a problem. Has anyone
encountered this or could you recommend help of some kind.

I had the same problem.

After deleting from register Do Not restart.

Install SQL Server. This worked for me.
