Having trouble re-installing SQL Server ... -

Howdy -
Got slammed (slammer worm)at work. Had to assume that my
system (which was on the network at the time and running
SQL Server might have been infected).
Tried to install SP3a.
Something went wrong and the system started to crawl.
I rebooted the system. Then uninstalled SQL Server 2000.
Ran antivirus and a fix/check tool for the slammer that
I pulled from Symantec. NAV said my machine was not
infected. The Fix/check tool also confirmed this.
I re-installed SQL Server 2000. But despite my best
efforts, I was unable to start the server - connection
and login errors abounded.
So, I de-installed the product again. I noticed that the
SQL Server folder was not removed from under the Program
Files folder, so I removed that subtree as well.
Could it be that there was something in those folders
that was keeping the SQL Server getting re-installed
clean?
Must I clean the registry as well?
Please advise. I didn't have this problem with the
initial installation of SQL Server 2000, and I really need
to get this back up and running.
Thanks very much.
