Default Error: Handle does not support synchronous operations... When inst - 05-13-2010 , 02:51 PM

Hello,
I get the following error when installing SQL Server 2008R2 on a Server
2003R2 Standard system. I have installed .net 3.5 sp1 and win installer 4.5.
System config checker says everything is good. I get the error as soon as
the product key is entered and hit next. Any ideas??

SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error:

Handle does not support synchronous operations. The parameters to the
FileStream constructor may need to be changed to indicate that the handle was
opened asynchronously (that is, it was opened explicitly for overlapped I/O)..

Thanks
Wes

I've seen many errors with Setup, but this was an unusual one. My guess
is that something is wacko on your box, but what I have no clue.

I've forwarded your post to our internal MVP forum where some MS
devs hang around too.

Thank you. I have tried on two different machines. Both with fresh installs
of Server2003 R2

Even more interesting.

What I've heard so far, no one seems to recognize this. Could you file a
bug on http://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback? Please make sure
that you attach the logs in
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log.

I would also be nice if you could post the link here, so I can forward
it directly to the MS Devs.

I'm getting the same error. I'm also trying to install or update a Windows
2003 R2 machine.

When I try from the command line with Setup.exe /qs /ACTION=upgrade
/INSTANCENAME=MSSQLSERVER /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS

I get this error:
System cannot open the device or file specified. The offending file in the
log is sql_engine_core_inst.msi

I does not seem that the original poster submitted a bug on Connect, so
I welcome you to do so, according to the instructions below?

Although, the error you get when running from the command-line makes
me suspect a corrupt download. But that's a mere speculation.

We tried a different and verified download that worked on other machines....
Same problem. I will file a connect bug, although for something this serious
I was hoping to get a MSFT reply either here or on the forum post I made.

For Setup problems, they devs really need the logs. A Connect item may
work, if the error in the logs is apparent to them. But if you really
need it to be resolved, you would need to open a case. This does not
the least apply if the reason is a bug in the Setup, and you would need a
hotfix.

I don't think anyone from Microsoft is going to answer here, as they are
abandoning the newsgroups. But it is possible that someone will answer
in the forums. But I can guess the answer: file a Connect bug and attach
the logs....
