Default Changed SQL Server 2005 service account and unable to login? - 11-02-2009 , 07:49 PM

Hello, we have a SQL Server 2005 installation that was running it's service
as a local user on it's own machine. Recently the machine got upgraded as
an Active Directory domain controller and now the SQL Server Management
Studio won't allow me to logon since it was using Windows Authentication
mode only. How can I change it's service to run as a different windows
account or even get into SQL Server? Thanks in advance.

Hi, Check whether the account you are using to login is part of
Administrator group. If not add the account to local administrator and try.

Thanks Balaji, but that previous machine's local user account doesn't seem
to exist and can't find it in the list? So it appears to be kind of strange
how an account can just disappear like that?

I am not sure how the account would have disappeared. But you could always
login into the SQL Server with the domain administrator account.

Thanks to you also Rick for your speedy info, much appreciated. It looks
like I have pretty much the exact same situation as this person had
http://www.ureader.com/msg/11581779.aspx with our Windows 2003 OS
environment and upgrade to DC of SQL 2005 on same machine. After doing some
research I realize that the local machine's accounts get wiped out when it
gets promoted as a DC so does it look like a SQL uninstall will be the route
which that doesn't appear to be straight forward with left over remnants and
registry values still lingering or another better way? Thanks for both of
your helpful efforts.
