Default Can't reinstall SQL Server 2005 Std Database Services - 11-10-2009 , 02:48 PM

Setup: Application server running Windows Server 2003 R2 Std., with Windows
Defender and Symantec Corporate Antivirus v10.2. Intent is to use this
server to host SharePoint Server 2007 Enterprise, with SQL Server 2005 as
the database.

How I got here: Had a BIG problem between SharePoint and SQL Server so I
did a complete uninstall of both, using Revo Uninstaller, then deleting all
leftover folders. I am trying to install SQL Server 2005, with SP's and all
required security updates, before I install SharePoint.

The Problem: I can install all components, except for the database
services. It gives me an error that "it can't start the service"
(elaborated below). I've tried 5-6 times over the last 9 hours to install
this. I've googled the errors, with no luck. They all seem geared toward
either SQL Server 2005 Express, or installing on Windows XP. I've tried
installing one component at a time, in various orders, same result.

I'm stumped (it doesn't help that I'm a SQL newbie in knowledge).

Here's the errors I'm seeing. Hope someone can help!

The lone Application Log entry:

If it helps, I've reinstalled Windows Installer 4.5 several times - no
change.

Any ideas out there?

Hi Mike,
What is the SQL Server service account specified during your setup? Please
try using Local System as the service account and see if this happens
again. From the error message, it looks that the service account has not
enough permission to start your SQL Server.

If this issue persists, please temporarily disable Windows Defender on your
Windows Server 2003 and see if it helps.

Best regards,
Charles Wang

It's a Domain User account that is also part of the Local Administrators
group. I'll try your idea and report back.

I'm interested. Was the solution to disable windows defender or to install as
local system?

Thanks
Frede
