Default After SQL 2008 installation - Windows shutdown takes 20 minutes - 08-10-2009 , 11:10 AM

After Installing SQL Server 2008 (developer edtion) instance on my laptop it
taks 20 minutes to shut down.

Then if I wish to start the system again it will not start for maybe another
five or ten minutes.

Here are some pertinent facts;
Vista Ultimate SP 1
Processor type: Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo CPU
(System requirements: Pentium III-compatible processor or faster)
Processor Speed: 1.5GHz
(System requirements: 1.0 GHz min, recommended: 2.0 GHz or faster)

2GB RAM
Disk free space - 99GB

Also installed is a default instance of SQL Server 2005 Developer edition
(9.0.4035)

This is a learning machine. I am requesting insight into the lengthy shut
down? And if there anything to be concerned about?

Has this happened more than once?

How long does it take to stop SQL Server alone?

You mean until you can actually use the computer? Yeah, it takes at
least ten desktop is usuable after a reboot. Interesting enough my
laptop is not at all that horrible, and both have one instance each of
SQL 2008 and SQL 2005. But there is more crap on the desktop, that's
true.

Hi dbuchanan,

Thank you for using Microsoft MSDN Managed Newsgroup. My name is Mark Han.
I am glad to work with you on this issue.

From your description, I understand that after installing sql 2008
developer instance, it will take you more time to shutdown and start the
whole machine.
If I have misunderstood, please let me know.

in order to narrow down the problem, please do the following and tell me
the result
1 please just shutdown the sql to see how log it will take

2 set the sql to start manully and shutdown it; after that please shudown
the machine to see if the issue will happen.

3 tell me if we could reproduce the issue whenever we want

Besdies, since there are just 2GB memory in the machine, it is not
suggested to install 2 sql instances on it because that will have influnce
on the performance

If there is anything unclear, please do not hesitate to let me know. Have a
nice day!

Best regards,
Mark Han
