I am attempting to install SSMS (full not express) on XP sp3 box but it fails. No error message given other than to examine the setup logs (which I can't find). A Google search turned up an issue with service 3 for XP. So, I tried to install SSMS on a W2003 server (sp2) but got the same failure. I'm at a loss with this. Can someone point me in the right direction? |

Thanks. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any real errors (at least, any that stood out). So, I took a server, completely re-formated the machine and installed Windows 2003 Standard. I tried to install the SQL 2005 SSMS and it still fails. Does anybody have ideas or run into a similar situation? |

And more how exactly, how do you try to install? -- Erland Sommarskog, SQL Server MVP, esquel (AT) sommarskog (DOT) se Links for SQL Server Books Online: SQL 2008: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/sqlserver/cc514207.aspx SQL 2005: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/sqlserver/bb895970.aspx SQL 2000: http://www.microsoft.com/sql/prodinf...ons/books.mspx |

Finally got it. I had to dig a bit through some of the logs but found an error message saying it couldn't find a file. I presume the file was corrupted as I found it. However, I downloaded SQL from MS again and ran the install once more. That got the program installed. (Sometimes, I miss the old CD days.) |

Good to hear that you got it resolved, but too bad you first had to flatten your machine. (Next time you run into such an issue, make a clean install on a virtual machine, rather than format and start over.) -- Erland Sommarskog, SQL Server MVP, esquel (AT) sommarskog (DOT) se Links for SQL Server Books Online: SQL 2008: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/sqlserver/cc514207.aspx SQL 2005: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/sqlserver/bb895970.aspx SQL 2000: http://www.microsoft.com/sql/prodinf...ons/books.mspx |

Not everybody's virtualized, Erland. ![]() Hopefully, in a year or two we will be. |
