Default Running and sleeping processes - 10-17-2003 , 04:43 AM

Hi there,

Can somebody tell me the differences between SLEEPING and RUNNING
processes? I cannot find an explaination in BOL. If there is a thread on
this issue somewhere, can you put a link?

Tnx,

Hans Brouwer

sleeping status indicates that the SPID has completed execution and is
waiting for the application to submit another query or batch. A runnable
status indicates the SPID is currently processing a query

Tnx Allan, the article sure helped. It also raised another question.
RUNNABLE indicates SPID is executing. What does RUNNING indicate, then?
I would asume the latter would indicate executing...

According to the table it doesn't exist. I can't think I've seen it either.
Where do you see it exactly?

Hi Hans,

Thanks for your feedback. As I understand, Sp_who provides information
about current Microsoft SQL Server users and processes, which are fetched
from the sysprocesses system table. Based on my research, in the result set
returned from the stored procedure sp_who and the sysprocesses system
table, we are unable to get the RUNNING status of SQL Server process, but
the RUNNABLE status. A RUNNABLE status indicates the SPID is currently
processing a query.

Thanks for using MSDN newsgroup.

Regards,

Michael Shao
