Default Initialize a Transactional Subscription from a Backup - 08-28-2009 , 03:13 PM

can i use differential back up to initialize my transactional subscription?
my full back is too large to setup the replication for every maintenance so
if i can use differential back up on top of my existing backup on subscriber.

any help appreciated.

Just to be clear i am thinking following steps

remove subscription
take differential back up on publisher
create subscription on the basis of differential back up above
restore differentail backup of publisher on subscriber(this step i am not
sure how it will match the LSN)

Hi

I am not a replication expert but...

You will not be able to create a database solely from a differential backup.
You will need to restore the full backup first, then the differential. Once
these are restored I don't see why you can't use manual initialisation
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms147897.aspx if the differential
backup is taken at the time you would normally take a full backup.

Thanks John for your reply , just to confirm below step i am considering to
have publisher differential backup restoration on already available database
at subscriber end but is that possible to have differential backup restored
from different server database over already availabe database?

restore differentail backup of publisher on subscriber(this step i am not
sure how it will match the LSN)

John

You must restore a the full back first and use the norecovery option
