Default Win XP & Analysis Services - 07-26-2004 , 08:19 AM

I'm having problems with AS on my laptop. (first time installed on
this laptop).

OS is Win XP Pro SP1 (with all the Windows updates)
It is the Developer Edition (which comes with SP3a disc) of SQL Server
2000.

SQL Server (the relational part) seems fine.
When I install Analysis Services the CPU goes beserk.
Specifically the process: msmdsrv.exe

I've applied SP3a including the setup in the MSOLAP folder.
When I look at the build number in Analysis Manager it is the one for
SP3/a.

Also, I cannot connect to the Analysis Server.
The message is 'the server is either not started or too busy'.

My user profile includes being a member of the 'OLAP Adminstrators'
group & well as 'Adminstrators'.

Additional info:
1. When I install Database Server, on the service accounts screen, I
don't seem to be able to choose 'Use a Domain Account', the correct
username & domain detail are there automatically, the password is
blank, I leave it blank (as I don't have a password), but the message
comes back 'logon account can't be validated'. So I 'Use the Local
System Account' & continued installing.
2. I seem to have the .Net framework installed twice (1.1 & 2.0); a
problem?
3. The default servername in Analysis Manager is my domain, not local)
(Windows NT) as it is for the Database Server when viewed in
Enterprise Manager.
4. I unregister the Analysis Server in Analysis Manager & re-register,
but get the same error message 'server too busy'.
5. When I stop the Analysis Server 'MSSQLServerOLAPService' on Service
Manager, the msmdsrv process stops & the CPU is back to normal.
6. When I now start my laptop instead of loading my user profile
automatically, I'm now prompted to choose a user, eventhough I am the
only user profile available to choose.

I very much need AS.
Please HELP!

Regards,

John Keeley

Default Win XP & Analysis Services - 07-26-2004 , 10:50 PM

hi,

developer edition seems to have all these problems ... cos
we used it once and got the same problems.. better to go
to the enterprise edition...

if u want to continue with delveloper edition..
first give an administrator password to ur windows user
account...and if ur laptop is a domain system... then only
go for domain account in the credentials... give ur
windows passsword there..dont leave it blank( meanwhile
create a password for ur windows account)

I think this will resolve all ur problems
if any doubts plz do write back.

bye,

Alex,

Many thanks for your response.

I am an end-user who has learnt OLAP & DW.
So my understanding of operating systems & the like is limited.

You say "first give an administrator password to ur windows user
account"

Well, when I look at 'Local Users & Groups' I see I have two users:
Administrator & JRK
Administrator is a member of Administrators & Debugger Users
JRK is a member of both of these & OLAP Administrators
JRK doesn't have a password so I create a password for it.
Administartor already has a password.

You then say "and if ur laptop is a domain system... then only go for
domain account in the credentials... give ur
windows passsword there..dont leave it blank"

Well, the laptop is stand alone, I'm not connecting to any network.
Does this mean I cannot choose 'Use a Domain User account' when
installing SQL Server; I have to choose 'Use the Local System account'?

Then you say "( meanwhile create a password for ur windows account)"
How is this different from creating a password for JRK, which I've
already now done?

I uninstalled SQL Server & AS.
Restarted the laptop.
Then reinstalling SQL Server on the 'Services Accounts' screen, 'Use a
Domain User account', I try entering in my JRK password (Username left
as JRK & the default domain 'KEELEY') but get the same message "the
logon a/c cannot be validated...verify username & password..."
I then tried username, Adminstrator, & its password & got the same
message.

Other editions of SQL Server are not an option because of price.

All I want to do is use AS on my laptop!
Why should it be so difficult?

Regards,

John

Is there anyone using Analysis Services with Win XP Pro?

I still can't get anywhere with it.

Any help would be welcome.
