Hi,

What is Pivot Table services? Does it get installed by selecting "some"
option when installing Office XP or does this have to be downloaded from
some Microsoft site and then installed?

Thanks.

It's the (required) client-side component for querying MSAS. It installs
with Office XP -- not sure if by default though.

If Office doesn't install it for you (when you say that you want Office Web
Components), you can always do it yourself. It is located on the SQL Server
2000 SP3 Analysis Services distribution in the folder:

msolap\install\pts

You will see two files:
ptslite.exe -- Which is PTS and *ONLY* PTS
ptsfull.exe -- Which is PTS and the full MDAC stack as well

This is the latest and greatest.
BTW, PTS is the shorthand name for its real name, i.e. the "OLEDB Provider
for OLAP". Just like you have an OLEDB Provider for SQL (the relational
database) and an OLEDB Provider for Oracle -- Analysis Services has an OLEDB
Provider for it (PTS).

Hope that helps.

Tom and Dave,

Thanks for the replies.

Is it okay to infer that Pivot Table Services is only of use if the user
wants to browse/analyze a cube using the Pivot table either in Excel or
in Internet Explorer?

I am also assuming that if the user has some other front-end tool for
cube browsing/navigation then he/she can ignore the Pivot table service
and should not be bothered if it's installed or not.

Can you kindly confirm my understanding.

Thanks

Pivot Table Service (PTS) is always required, regardless of front-end.
(PTS's name is an endless source of confusion for new users -- I've never
understood how it was that Microsoft ran out of nouns.)
