Default Visual Totals Problem with Dimension Security - 06-02-2006 , 02:37 AM

Hi,

I have enabled Dimension security on our Geography-Dimension (which is a
parent-child Dimension with World - Europe - Spain - .....), so that our
Salesoffice in Spain can only see data from Spain. All works fine except
when I enable Visual Totals and reconnect to the cube in the Visual Studio
Development, I get an error: "Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a
Call to a COM component". The Details Button shows:
------------------------------
Program Location:

at Microsoft.Office.Interop.Owc11.PivotView.get_Field Sets()
at Microsoft.AnalysisServices.Browse.CubeBrowser.Tran slatePivotTable()
at Microsoft.AnalysisServices.Browse.CubeBrowser.Upda tePivotTable(Boolean
translate)
at Microsoft.AnalysisServices.Browse.CubeBrowser.Upda teAll(Boolean
translate)
at Microsoft.AnalysisServices.Browse.CubeBrowser.Reco nnectCanFail()
at
Microsoft.AnalysisServices.Browse.CubeBrowser.Supp ortFunctionWhichCanFail(FunctionWhichCanFail
function)

When I than disable Visual Totals, all works fine again. Does anyone know a
solution?

Thanks
Hans

I have tested it a little bit more, and it's only with parent-child
dimensions (as i think now). With other dimensions, visual totals work OK.

Hi Hans,

You're right, this is an issue with parent-child dimensions in AS 2005.
Apparently, it has now been fixed:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918222
Quote:
Cumulative hotfix package (build 2153) for SQL Server 2005 is available
...
SQL Server 2005 Post-SP1 hotfixes that are included in SQL Server 2005
build 9.0.2153

Note Microsoft Knowledge Base articles that discuss these hotfixes will
be released as they become available.

SQL Bug number Description
410 Dimension security does not support visual totals on a parent
attribute that is in a parent-child dimension.

Hallo Deepak,

Thanks for your answer. Its realy pretty that it has been fixed by
Microsoft, and I have not to do a workaround!!!!

Thanks again
Hans
