Default User-generated Error msg on dimension & NT accounts limitations for AS? - 07-01-2003 , 09:45 AM

The msg:
User-generated error - the dimension "Institution" has
no valid member. For more information, see your
administrator.

Background information:
I've set up a security model based on the Filter example
in the SQLMag from January(?) and have been fairly
successful in getting it to work. Except the above
problem which only occurs for certain NT user accounts.

I have four users, all with identical security
permissions, both in our asp app and on the NT server.
Two of the four always work and the other two always
fail. The ids are:

1) john.ciba (This account actually produced this: Cannot
open database ... Connection to the server is lost)
2) steve1
3) gary
4) demowf

user's 2 and 4 always work and 1 & 3 always fail. I began
to wonder if it was somehow tied to user id length or
certain characters in the id that could cause it to have
these problems. As a test I lengthened the number of
characters on 3 and processed the cubes and it worked. I
also tested replacing the period on id 1 and it also
worked.

Are there any documented characters/user id lengths with
NT accounts that give AS problems? All of these accounts
can be validly created in NT.
I did notice that a few others on the board had seen
similar issues, and one had noted seeing the NT Authority
logging in. (I did notice this for the 3rd id, but didn't
test the others.)

Other info: on w2k, sql2k sp3a, AS sp 3a, in a workgroup
rather than domain, with web boxes in a dmz hitting AS
through a firewall.

While it is possible to scrub all of our account names I
really don't want to inform about 2000 users that their
user accounts have changed. :-)

Thank you for your help!
