Default Table updates from server - 12-07-2006 , 11:47 AM

Hi all,

I am currently designing an analysis services project for my company
and have completed about 95% of it. I was recently asked however if the
tables are able to get new information from the server where the tables
are stored. Heres where my problem starts, I am not an SQL expert and
since i have basic knowlege of sql, i was volunteered for this project.
I have searched the net, but have found nothing that makes sense to me.

My thoughts:
I think that the data source view tables are able to be updated because
i have seen new information in the tables sometimes, but I know for a
fact that the cube dimensions are not updatable right now.
What i would like to do is get an automated process that would update
the tables in the data source view(if they arent already beign updated)
and the dimensions in the cube. If anyone has ideas, or would like
more clarification, let me know.

By the way, I am using SQL server 2005.

Thanks in advance,
O.

Hi

It depends on which type of storage settings of your cube and
dimensions.
I think your dimension are of type MOLAP.
If your dimension storage is MOLAP then you have to process dimensions.
In SQL Server 2005 you can use rich features of Proactive caching if
you are using Enterprise Edition.

For Cubes it has three storage settings MOLAP, HOLAP,ROLAP.

Look at BOL for Storage settings and Processing Options

Hi,

If you want to automate the update process you use might want to
use SSIS (Integration Services). Basically you'll do the following
steps (If you use molap storage for your data):

1.) Reload/Recalc the relational tables your dimensions are build on
(Ask your relational staff if your data is actual automatically)

2.) Process your dimensions

3.) Process your cubes

You can put all these steps into an SSIS Package wich you start e.g.
every night
via Sql Server Agent.
