Default Strange Behaviour on Excel when Using OLAP - 04-14-2006 , 11:17 AM

Hello

I have seen some wierd behaviour that I have a hard time replicating
consistently when using SSAS 2005 and Excel 2003.

I have a dimension for dates and another for accounts. The accounts
dim is a parent-child one. I also have a another one for organisation
which I use as a page filter in Excel. When I put dates on columns,
accounts on rows and expand the acccounts dim to 5 levels (with the
date dim also extended to its max) all works fine. When I expand the
accounts dim one more level to its final level one of my items in
accounts dim loses it leaf members. The total shows and it calculates
properly. The problem is that I cannot replicate this consistently.
Sometimes it occurs and sometimes not. I have spent 3 days taking
things apart, starting with minimal data etc. It seems to work fine
in Visual Studio. Another interesting thing is that the behaviour
seems to go away when I use a macro to show all the hidden members in
Excel and then hide those members again with a macro. A little
fiddling with the Include Hidden Items in Totals button on the toolbar
will make it work.

FYI - the accounts dim has 6 levels deep and is about 200 items long
including unary operators.

Anyone have any ideas of what settings I might try and tweak in Visual
Studio to make this issue go away? Is there some limit on depth in
parent child dims? What am I missing? Any suggestions would be
appreciated!

Thanks

jph

Hello,

According to the symptoms, this seems to be some limitation or issus in
Excel. I did some research and didn't find any known issue about this.

You may want to check if the issue occurs on different machine/clients. You
may want to post this in Excel newsgroup so that you may get more qualified
answers there.
