Default Storage Settings for MOLAP Lost - 03-16-2005 , 04:33 PM

This may be a newbie question, but if anybody has any guidance I would
greatly appreciate it. I would think that I'm not the only one to be
in this situation.

The problem I'm having is that small, apparently irrelevant changes to
my cubes cause the MOLAP data storage settings to be lost in AS2K.
This can result in a great deal of effort in the way of recreating
aggregation design, especially if many cubes & partitions are involved
and/or if the aggregation designs for those cubes took advantage of
usage-based optimization somewhere along the line.

Is there a way to retain aggregation design in my partitions despite
an insignificant change such as adding a new shared virtual dimension
or a new measure? Is there perhaps a utility or an Analysis Manager
option I am over-looking?

If I remember right, the message I get to show that Analysis Manager
is about to delete my work is simply: "Storage settings for your cube
will be deleted."

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
David Beavon

Both of the two events you describe, i.e. adding a measure and creating a
virtual dimension, modify the internal structure of an aggregate and thus
have to be redesigned.

OK, I guess I understand that some internal implementation details may
require rebuilding. But what I really want to preserve is the part of
the aggregation design whereby we've spent a great deal of time
determining % optimization, dimensions to aggregate on, levels to
aggregate on, and we've even gone thru usage based optimization to add
additional aggregations.

It would seem the dimensions and levels of the aggregation design
should be able to be preserved so all these steps aren't necessarily
revisited.

Is writing a custom DSO utility my only hope for solving this problem?

Any help would be appreciated.

Look at the SQL Server 2000 Resource Kit.
There is a utility called Partition Manager which might help.
There is also a version of it included in the SQL Server Accelerator for BI
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/ssabi/default.asp -- it is installed in the
Tools folder.
I think that it might allow you to save and restore agg designs, but you
might have to extend it to save dimensions and levels by-name rather than
internal representations.

A similar method would to be to look at the XML representation saved by
DSO/XML
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
