Default Starting AS2005 Service - 02-08-2006 , 04:30 PM

I have just installed SS2005 and am verifying the install.

When going to SS Management Studio's Object Explorer I can connect to the
Database Engine, SSIS, and RS.

When I try to connect to AS I get a "A connection cannot be made, ensure
that the server is running" message.

Checking SQL Server Configuration Manager in "SS2005 Services" the following
are listed:
SSIS
SS Full Text Search
SS
SSRS
SS Browser
SS Agent

I tried to re-install AS but the installer says it is installed.

How do I get AS it to start??

Thanks in advance
GH

Hey GH,

If memory serves, I had the same problem. SQL and AS are locked down out of
the box and you need to open some ports and such via the SQL Server
Configuration Manager in your start menu. Books online has additional info.

Best of luck,

-Joey

Hi vakar,
Welcome to use MSDN Managed Newsgroup Support.

From your description, my understanding of this issue is: You can not
connect to Analysis Service after you install SQL Server 2005. If I
misunderstood your concern, please feel free to point it out.

Could you find the Analysis Services is running in Windows Services?

If not, you need to check whether you have successfully installed Analysis
Services in the setup log file.

To read a SQL Server Setup log file
1. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to:
%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG
2. Open the Summary.txt file. Look through it for error messages.
3. If you do not find information in the Summary.txt file that tells
you what failed, open the SQLSetup[xxxx].cab file in the same root
directory.
4. If this .cab file does not exist, open up the CORE log file from:
%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Files
Look at the most recently modified core log:
SQLSetup[xxxx]_[ComputerName]_Core.log.
5. If an error was displayed in the user interface during Setup,
look for this log: SQLSetup[xxxx][s]_[ComputerName]_WI.log.
6. When parsing a SQLSetup_[xxxx] log file, search the file for 'UE
3'. This is short for 'Return Value 3'.
7. If a component failed during the installation progress dialog,
open the log file SQLSetup[xxxx]_[ComputerName]_SQL.log, and perform the
'UE 3' search to scan for errors.

You can find the information in this article:
How to: View SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143702.aspx

If the Analysis Services is not installed successfully, I recommend you to
clean up the Analysis Services and reinstall it.
You can use the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility to clean up it:

Hope this will be helpful!

I found errors ... and articles about side by side installations of SS2k and
SS2k5

I removed both SS2k and SS2k5 and did the cleanup.

Installed SS2k as the default and SS2k5 as an instance.

All services are running ... and both AS's are working.
