Default STAR/SNOWFLAKE performance in OLAP implementations - 09-21-2006 , 12:50 AM

Hi All,

I'm trying to make design decision about STAR or SNOWFLAKE implementation of
my data mart.
I know that all books say STAR is better, faster etc, etc. and SNOWFLAKE is
still fine, if really nedded (and I think I do in my case).

My question is not about design principles, but about performance of
STAR/SNOWFLAKE in OLAP.

The question is: has anyone attempted done any performance comparison of
STAR/SNOWFLAKE? I knkow that it "all depends" on many things, but any
comparative indication or guideline would help.

Many thanks for feedback,

one more comment:

Let's assume MOLAP storage.
In case of SNOWFLAKE design, is the data flattened anyway when it's loaded
to the cube?
Or maybe even though it's loaded to cube, it's still stored in a snowflake
way?

yes, data are flattened
so there is no difference in the cube if the source is a snowflake or not.
