Default SSAS 2005 usage on 32bit machine - how memory sharing with SQL SERVER works? - 06-01-2006 , 07:58 AM

Hi,

If I have 32bit machine that has both SQL Server 2005 AND SSAS 2005
installed, how do they share memory on the same hardware?
I know that SQL Server can use 3GB of ram and SSAS can use 3GB of RAM. So If
I have 8GB on machine, will SQL use 3GB and SSAS 3GB? Or because on OS
limitations, just first 3GB are available to both SQL and SSAS to share.
What If I enable AWE on SQL Server, will it know then that SQL Server should
use top 3GB, and first 3 GB should go to SSAS? I believe there is no AWE
option for SSAS, am I right?

Thanks

The 3Gb limit is per process (and only if you have the 3Gb switch in
your boot.ini, otherwise the limit is 2Gb per process)

So on an 8Gb machine (and the operating system is able to access all
8Gb) the SQL will use 3Gb and SSAS will use 3Gb.

You are correct, there is no AWE option for SSAS.

so if you had a 32bit machine and 24 gb of memory.. you could have 6
3gb instances of analysis services??
