Default SSAS 2005: OWC that comes with and code around - 09-21-2006 , 10:17 AM

Hello,

Our company right now is using extensivly OWC components and they do not
work very nice with SSAS 2005 and in Office 2007 there will be no OWC. New
Excel services does not help here, as we need interactive pivots.
But in Business inteligence studio there is OWC component and nice interface
to properly show dimensions, attributes and etc. Anybody knows how Microsoft
done that? Maybe there is open code for such implementation? Is there
anything else you would suggest to look for OWC replacement?

Thanks

Hello,

I understand that you 'd like to know the replacment of OWC in Office 2007.

As I know, OWC will not ship with the 2007 Microsoft Office system. Though
they will not be updated, OWC will ship with Microsoft Office Project
Server 2007.

OWC is being discontinued because Microsoft needed a more flexible
technology to help customers address the following challenges they faced
with OWC:
• A server-side Excel calculation engine
• Help provide for greater parity with Excel when worksheets are delivered
over the Web
• The ability to enable spreadsheets to be more scalable and stable when
loaded onto a server
• Improved security
• The ability to perform more detailed analysis to improve overall business
intelligence

The Enterprise Client Access License (CAL) version of Microsoft Office
SharePoint Server 2007 will include a technology called Excel Services that
includes:

• A server-side Excel calculation engine.
• The ability to enable browser-based worksheet viewing and interactivity.
• Web service access to the spreadsheet calculation engine in Excel.*
*Note that this means that Excel Services has been designed to scale and
perform on a server and it is not merely an Excel spreadsheet stored on a
server

Additionally, Excel Services offers a similar user interface to the new
Office Excel 2007 client application, and support for new Office Excel 2007
specific functionality, with data visualizations such as gradients, data
bars and icons, new Table and PivotTable styles, and full integration with
Data Connection Libraries.

For more information on this, you may want to post Office 2007 Beta posts
to the Public Community specifically setup for the Beta -
http://www.microsoft.com/office/prev...community.mspx

As for components to browse cube in BIS, it is integrated into client UI
and not easy to be extracted as a stand alone control such as pivottable.
As I know, I don't know the plan to provide such feature in the near
future. However, please rest assured your feedback is routed to the product
team, I also encourage you submit via the link below

Thank you.
