Default Shared dim rebuild locks AS - 02-24-2005 , 11:23 AM

I have a particular shared dimension in a copy of one of my production AS
databases which needs a full rebuild (not incremental). When I do so, it
locks up AS and no one can connect to any cube until I stop and re-start the
service.

All other shared dims in this db rebuild just fine.

Any ideas where to start?

More info:

Ran Perfmon with all AS counters looking for something that was different
before/after the rebuild attempt so I could establish an alert. Couldn't put
my finger on anything.

There was a 'heartbeat' of lock/unlock requests (large spike followed by 2
small spikes..repeat) which was slightly altered (2 large and 2 small), but
no other changes that I could see. The fact that the heartbeat continued
would seem to indicate that the service was still doing something, just not
responding to Analysis Manager or other OLAP tools.

Analysis Manager coughed up an error when I killed the service (after 10
minutes or so) that indicated it was unable to commit. By that time there had
been no significant activity in perfmon other than the heartbeat for at least
5 min.

Still stumped.
